Reading Publishing Guides Critically and Using Them Well
A large collection of guides can overwhelm a newcomer. These pointers help you pick what matters for your stage of research and apply advice without being misled by it.
- Start from your immediate goal. Decide whether you are choosing a journal, polishing a draft or checking credibility, then read only the guides for that task. Focused reading saves effort and reduces confusion.
- Cross-check rules you rely on. Guidelines from regulators, universities and funders change. Confirm important requirements on the issuing body's own website before you build a submission decision on a summary.
- Keep a personal checklist. Turn useful advice into a short list covering scope fit, ethics, formatting and references. Reuse it for every paper so quality does not depend on memory.
- Separate explanation from opinion. Notice whether an article explains how a system works or merely recommends a choice. Treat opinions as starting points and test them against your own discipline's norms.
- Share guides with co-authors. Agree on authorship, data handling and target journals together, using the same reference material. Shared understanding prevents disputes late in the process.
Use guides to ask better questions, then confirm every decision that affects your career with primary sources.
Questions Researchers Often Ask
Which topics does the JMVRA journal blog address?
The blog offers 441 free guides across 18 topics: writing and formatting, charges, publishing guidance, metrics, research integrity, indexing and databases, DOIs and identifiers, UGC CARE and UGC’s parameters, and choosing a journal. Browse by topic to find the guide that suits your stage of publishing.
Can anyone read the guides without paying?
Yes. All guides can be read at no cost, and there is neither a sign-up requirement nor a paywall.
How do I confirm that a statement in a guide is correct?
Whenever a guide states a fact about a database, metric or regulator, it shows you how to check that fact at its source, such as the ISSN Portal, Crossref Search or the database’s own journal list. Checking at the source takes only a minute and protects you from outdated claims.
How does this page differ from blog.php and blog1.php?
Here the journal’s guides are grouped by topic. In contrast, blog.php holds long-form Blog articles about UGC, indexing, DOIs and the publishing network, while blog1.php has the newest posts, guest posts and announcements. Use whichever page fits what you are looking for.
May I contribute a guest post to JMVRA.org?
Yes. Submissions that are original and properly sourced for a research readership are welcome, and each is reviewed ahead of publication. The guest post guide has the details.
What is the process for publishing a paper in JMVRA?
Send your paper online at jmvra.org. All papers undergo transparent, double-blind peer review. The fee is ₹971 INR for Indian authors or $41 USD for foreign authors, due only after acceptance, and it covers up to 5 authors.
