Searching for Scopus journals in the Philippines? Philippine journals in Scopus are on the rise, along with some in Web of Science, spanning the Philippine Journal of Science and university titles from Manila, Quezon City, Los Baños, Cebu City and Cagayan de Oro. Inside you will find Philippine journals that report Scopus or Web of Science coverage, an overview of the SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI indexes and the Q1–Q4 quartiles, and a way to test any indexing claim yourself before you submit.
What Is Scopus?
Scopus is Elsevier’s abstract and citation database. An independent Content Selection and Advisory Board evaluates journals before adding them, and a journal can be discontinued once it no longer meets the standards. Scopus supplies CiteScore, and the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) draws on its data. Being indexed in Scopus shows that a journal passed a selection process; it does not guarantee the quality of any single article. Judge each paper on its own methods and evidence.
Understanding Web of Science
Web of Science is a citation database from Clarivate. Its Core Collection holds the journal indexes SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI. Each year, Journal Citation Reports (JCR) issues the Journal Impact Factor and category quartiles. Details are in our Web of Science explainer.

Philippine Journals in Web of Science

Verified on 4 October 2026 against journal, publisher and PEJ pages. “As stated” means that the journal or publisher reports the coverage, not that we confirmed it independently. Philippine E-Journals maintains its own pages for journals it marks as Scopus and Clarivate accredited.
SCI, SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI Compared
| Index | Covers | Journal Impact Factor? |
|---|---|---|
| SCI / SCIE | Science Citation Index (Expanded): natural sciences, medicine, engineering | Yes |
| SSCI | Social Sciences Citation Index | Yes |
| AHCI | Arts & Humanities Citation Index | Yes, since the 2023 JCR release |
| ESCI | Emerging Sources Citation Index: quality-checked journals in all fields | Yes, since the 2023 JCR release |
| Scopus | A separate database (Elsevier), all fields | No JIF — CiteScore and SJR instead |
Today “SCI” normally refers to SCIE. A claim like “ISI indexed” or “Web of Science indexed” that does not name the index is incomplete, so ask which one is meant.
Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 Explained
A quartile ranks a journal against others in one subject category in one year. The top 25% of a category on a given metric form Q1, the following 25% form Q2, and so on. The same journal can sit in Q1 for one category and Q3 for another, and its quartile can move from year to year. Quartiles from Clarivate (based on the JIF) and from SCImago (based on SJR) may disagree as well. See Web of Science quartiles explained.
Comparing Impact Factor, CiteScore and SJR
| Metric | Source | Window | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journal Impact Factor | Clarivate (Web of Science) | Two years | Journal Citation Reports |
| CiteScore | Elsevier (Scopus) | Four years | Scopus Sources |
| SJR | SCImago (Scopus data) | Three years, weighted | SCImago Journal & Country Rank |

Steps to Confirm Current Indexing
- Copy the print and online ISSN from the journal’s own website.
- Look up the ISSN in Scopus Sources, then confirm the coverage years and that the title is still active.
- Look up the ISSN in the Master Journal List and record the exact index (SCIE, SSCI, AHCI or ESCI).
- For Scopus-indexed titles, compare the SJR record on SCImago.
- Keep dated screenshots for your promotion or incentive file.
Spotting Discontinued Journals
Scopus keeps a list of discontinued titles, and its source records indicate when coverage stopped. Articles published after discontinuation are not added to Scopus. Watch for warning signs such as an abrupt jump in article volume, a scope that turns very broad, and coverage years that end. When a journal you are considering is on the discontinued list, pick another, and take particular care with cloned websites that borrow an indexed journal’s name.
Frequent Mistakes With Indexed Journals
- Relying on a homepage logo. A logo proves nothing; only the database record does.
- Muddling the index. “Web of Science” could mean SCIE, SSCI, AHCI or ESCI, and your requirement might specify only one of them.
- Overlooking a discontinuation. A title that was indexed last year might not be covered now.
- Being fooled by clones. Fake websites copy the names and ISSNs of indexed journals; enter the official address yourself.
- Neglecting fit. A paper outside an indexed journal’s scope is turned away at the desk, wasting weeks.
One short habit guards against all five: reach the journal via its official site, copy the ISSN, and check the Scopus Sources or Master Journal List record on the day you submit.
Choosing a Journal by Research Scope
Indexing is only one filter, so let your field lead: Acta Medica Philippina suits health research, The Philippine Agricultural Scientist agriculture, the Mindanao Journal of Science and Technology science and engineering, the Asia-Pacific Social Science Review social science, and Kritika Kultura or Humanities Diliman the humanities. After that, skim recent issues and confirm that your manuscript matches their scope, length and methods. If a journal is indexed but a poor match, it will reject the paper quickly.
How JMVRA suits Filipino authors
JMVRA is not indexed in Scopus or Web of Science and states this openly. It fits Filipino authors who want an affordable, peer-reviewed, open access international journal instead of a Scopus or Web of Science title.
- Fee: foreign authors pay $41 USD, only after acceptance, and the charge covers up to 5 authors; no payment is taken at submission or during review.
- Review: subject experts conduct transparent, double-blind peer review; similarity has to stay below 15%.
- Access: open access under CC BY 4.0, with copyright retained by authors; a Crossref DOI can be requested.
- Where indexing stands: listed in Google Scholar, and not listed in Scopus, Web of Science or DOAJ.

Practical Tips for Filipino Scholars Using Indexed Journal Information
Filipino scholars often read about many index labels and quartile terms at once. These suggestions turn that information into a clear shortlist and a manageable submission plan.
- Define the label before you rely on it. Learn what each index name actually means, including that some lists are broader or newer than others. Knowing the meaning prevents you from treating every label as the same level of selectivity.
- Check whether a journal is still active. Journals can be removed or stop publishing. Look at recent issues and the current database record, not an old blog post or a logo on a website.
- Compare scope with your abstract. Place your abstract beside the journal's aims. If you must stretch your topic to fit, another outlet is probably better, and editors usually notice the stretch.
- Build a one-page submission file. Keep title page, ethics statement, funding note, declarations and cover letter together in one folder. Reusing a ready file speeds every subsequent submission and reduces omissions.
- Involve overseas collaborators early. If you plan joint work, discuss data sharing, authorship order and funding acknowledgements before analysis. Early clarity keeps partnerships friendly and papers moving.
Understand what each label measures, confirm the journal is currently active, and select a venue by scope rather than by reputation alone.

Summary and What to Do Next
Many promotion and incentive rules in the Philippines weigh Scopus and Web of Science indexing, and quite a few Philippine journals now have that coverage. Because indexing status shifts over time, the dependable answer is whatever the databases themselves show when you search by ISSN on the day you make your choice. A quick search before each submission costs little and can prevent a costly mistake.
- Find out which standard your institution applies: Scopus, Web of Science, a named index or a particular quartile.
- Pick out candidate journals from the tables above that suit your subject area.
- Confirm each candidate against Scopus Sources and the Master Journal List, keeping screenshots that show the date as evidence.
- Weigh up their metrics using our guide to journals with a high impact factor.
