Practical Tips for Preparing a Manuscript for the Publication Process
Most delays in publishing come from avoidable preparation gaps rather than from the review itself. These habits help your paper move through each stage with fewer interruptions.
- Use the template from the start. Write inside the supplied template instead of reformatting at the end. Late conversion often disrupts headings, tables and references, and creates errors that screening staff must return.
- Prepare an anonymous version. Remove names, affiliations and identifying acknowledgements from the review copy, including file properties and self-references that point to you, and keep a separate title page.
- Check references against the text. Make sure every in-text citation has a matching entry in the reference list, formatted consistently. Orphaned or mismatched citations suggest carelessness to editors and reviewers.
- Have a colleague read it cold. Ask someone outside your project to read the abstract and introduction and summarise your contribution. Their misunderstandings show where the writing needs to be clearer.
- Plan for the final stage. Keep high-resolution figures, signed forms and author details ready, so that final documents can be supplied immediately after acceptance.
Prepare in the template, anonymise carefully, verify references and keep final materials ready, so every stage proceeds without avoidable delay.
