Contributing a chapter to an edited book gives you a way to share a review, synthesis or case study with a targeted audience, and in India such chapters are scored apart from journal articles. This guide walks through book chapter publication, from finding calls for chapters and writing proposals and chapters to review, ISBN and DOI, author agreements, UGC 2018 points, pre-submission checks and the way edited volumes work with JW Book.
Understanding Book Chapter Publication
A book chapter stands as a complete contribution inside an edited volume, meaning a book whose chapters are written by various authors around a common theme under one or more editors. The book itself has an ISBN, and single chapters can have DOIs as well. Reviews, overviews, case studies and applied work that matches the theme of a book all make good chapters. Check the theme against your material before you commit.
How a Chapter Differs From a Journal Article
| Aspect | Book chapter | Journal article |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier | The book has an ISBN, and a DOI exists when one is registered | The journal has an ISSN, and each article gets a DOI |
| Review | Handled by the volume editors, with external review differing | External peer review is the norm |
| Scope | Determined by the theme of the book | Determined by the aims of the journal |
| Typical content | Syntheses, reviews, methods and case studies | Reviews along with original research |
| Evaluation in India | Given a separate score under UGC 2018 | Counted as a research paper in scoring |
How to Find Calls for Chapters
- Editors announce calls for chapters via societies, university networks, mailing lists and the websites of publishers.
- Study the call with care and note its fees, if any, review process, publisher, editors, deadlines, chapter length and theme.
- Make sure the editors are genuine experts on the theme and the publisher can be identified.
Preparing a Chapter Proposal
A proposal or abstract is usually the first step for edited volumes. Provide a working title, a 300–500 word abstract, a section outline, a note on how the chapter suits the theme of the book, and brief author biographies. A fictional sample title for a volume on sustainable water management is “Community Monitoring of Rural Drinking Water: Methods and Lessons”.
Drafting the Complete Chapter
- Follow the editor’s template, length limit and citation style.
- Keep the book’s audience in mind, since students and practitioners often read chapters alongside specialists.
- Let the chapter work on its own by giving it a separate introduction, conclusion and reference list.
- Obtain permission before using figures from others; refer to copyright in academic publishing.
- Never recycle text from your published journal articles without permission and a citation.
Review and Revision
Chapters are normally assessed by the editors for fit and quality, and many volumes add external peer review. Revision requests are likely, at times to bring chapters in line with one another. Answer every point as you would for a journal, and see how to revise after peer review.
Indexing, ISBN and DOI
An ISBN marks out the book, with a separate one for each format such as print or ebook. The Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN issues ISBNs in India at no charge through isbn.gov.in. When the publisher registers one, a DOI can pinpoint an individual chapter. Neither number signals quality; a real review process and a credible publisher count for more. Read DOI for research papers for details.
Contributor Agreements and Author Rights
A contributor agreement is normally signed by chapter authors, dealing with copyright or licence, permission for third-party material, originality warranties and any rights of reuse, such as in a thesis or repository. Go through it before you sign; volumes published in open access commonly rely on Creative Commons licences. Ask the editor about any clause you do not understand.
UGC Scoring of Book Chapters in India
| Item | Points |
|---|---|
| Chapter in an edited book | 5 |
| Book authored — international publisher | 12 |
| Book authored — national publisher | 10 |
| Editor of a book — international publisher | 10 |
| Editor of a book — national publisher | 8 |
The regulations split credit for shared authorship as follows: where there are two authors each receives 70%, and where there are more than two, the first, principal or corresponding author gets 70% and each joint author 30%. How publishers are classified is decided by screening committees, and institutions may layer on rules of their own, so consult the current circular.
Pre-Submission Checks
Treat with caution any call that takes every topic, guarantees publication with no review, gives no editors or publisher, or demands big per-chapter fees without explaining the service. An authentic volume offers a defined theme, named editors, a described review process and an ISBN you can verify once published.
When You Are the Volume Editor
Volume editors set the theme, send out the call, pick proposals, arrange review, hold authors to deadlines and keep chapters consistent. Editing an edited book counts as a recognised academic contribution in its own right. Before issuing the call, settle review, ISBN, DOIs, licences and costs with the publisher.
Publishing Edited Volumes Through JW Book
As the book publication service within the JMVRA publication family, JW Book handles textbooks, reference works and edited volumes in which several authors contribute chapter by chapter and each is credited. The plans listed on the book publication page run from Basic (₹2,500, free ISBN) and Affordable (₹5,100, adds Crossref DOI registration) up to Standard (₹11,000, adds peer review of the book) and Premium (₹21,000), with GST extra. See the book publication and ISBN guide or go to jwbook.org. If you have a research article instead of a chapter, submit it to JMVRA.

Drafting a Book Chapter That Fits an Edited Volume
A chapter is written for a collection with a shared purpose, not as a standalone article. Thinking like a contributor to a team helps your chapter fit and be accepted.
- Study the volume's outline. Read the call carefully and see how other planned chapters divide the theme. Position yours so that it fills a gap instead of repeating a neighbour.
- Write for a broader readership. Book readers often include students and practitioners, so explain background and terms more gently than in a journal article. Clear teaching-style prose is welcome.
- Keep to the editor's instructions. Follow the stated length, citation style and deadline strictly. Editors assembling many contributions cannot afford to reformat each one.
- Cross-refer to other chapters. When the editor shares a contents list, mention related chapters where useful. This gives the volume coherence and shows you understand the larger project.
- Read the contributor agreement slowly. Check what rights you transfer, whether you may reuse parts of the text and how acknowledgement of earlier work is handled. Ask the editor to clarify any doubtful clause before signing.
Write your chapter as part of a connected whole, follow editorial instructions closely and understand the agreement before you sign.
Questions Researchers Often Ask
In Summary
Every good book chapter begins with an authentic call, meaning named editors, a credible publisher, a defined theme and a described review process. Follow the editor’s template, revise with care, study the contributor agreement and confirm the ISBN once the book is out. If you choose well, a chapter gives real value to both your record and your readers.
