ISBN in India

How to Get an ISBN for Your Book in India

An International Standard Book Number identifies one edition and format of a book — the paperback and the ebook each get their own. In India the ISBN is issued free by the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN, under the Ministry of Education.

Route A — apply yourself, free

Best if you will publish and distribute the book yourself.

  1. Register on isbn.gov.in (opens in a new tab) with your name, email and phone.
  2. Upload ID (PAN / Aadhaar) and address proof; the agency verifies the profile.
  3. Add the book: title, author, language, format, cover and copyright (verso) page.
  4. Request the ISBN, then print it on the copyright page and back cover.

Route B — publish with JW Book

Best if you want the publishing, ISBN and distribution handled together.

  1. Choose a JW Book plan — the ISBN is free on all four.
  2. Submit the manuscript; JW Book registers the ISBN under its imprint.
  3. The ISBN appears on the copyright page and cover of every format.
  4. You receive the ISBN details for your API, CAS or NAAC file.

ISBN vs DOI: the ISBN identifies the book edition; a Crossref DOI gives the book (or each chapter) a permanent, citable link with metadata. Academic books benefit from both.

Accreditation & points

Publishing a Book for API Score, CAS Promotion and NAAC

Books and chapters are scored separately from journal papers. These are the points in UGC Regulations 2018, Appendix II, Table 2 — the same for every faculty.

Whether a publisher counts as international or national is decided by your institution’s screening committee.

Co-authors and evidence

  • Two authors: 70% of the value each.
  • More than two: 70% to the first, principal or corresponding author; 30% to each joint author.
  • NAAC: books and chapters in edited volumes are counted per teacher, with the ISBN as evidence.

Keep for your file: the cover, the copyright page with ISBN, the contents page, your chapter’s first page and the publisher’s details.

How it works

How to Publish Your Book with JW Book

Seven steps from manuscript to a published book with ISBN — typically 7–25 working days, depending on the plan, the length and how quickly revisions come back.

  1. Choose a plan. Pick Basic, Affordable, Standard or Premium by what you need — DOI, printed copies, peer review, store listing.
  2. Submit the manuscript. Word, PDF or Google Doc. Anvi-AI can help draft and structure chapters; every draft is reviewed and approved by you.
  3. Editorial review. The team checks structure, flow and completeness and sends feedback.
  4. Originality check. A Turnitin / iThenticate similarity report confirms the manuscript before production.
  5. Editing, design & formatting. Cover, print-ready interior and front matter, with the ISBN on the copyright page.
  6. ISBN and DOI registration. The ISBN is registered free on every plan; a Crossref DOI is added where your plan includes it.
  7. Publish & distribute. The book goes live in your plan’s formats and channels, and your ISBN (and DOI) details are delivered.

Questions

Book Publication & ISBN FAQs

How do I get an ISBN for my book in India?
Either apply yourself, free, to the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN at isbn.gov.in — create an account, upload ID and the book details, and request the ISBN — or publish with a publisher that registers it for you. JW Book includes the ISBN free on every plan.
Is an ISBN free in India?
Yes. ISBNs issued by the national agency (Ministry of Education) are free. Be wary of sellers charging for ISBNs registered outside India.
How many API points does a book carry?
Under UGC Regulations 2018 (Table 2), a book authored with an international publisher scores 12, with a national publisher 10, a chapter in an edited book 5, and editing a book 10 (international) or 8 (national). Your institution’s screening committee decides how a publisher is classified.
How are points shared between co-authors?
Two authors receive 70% of the value each. With more than two authors, the first, principal or corresponding author receives 70% and each joint author 30%.
Does a book with ISBN count for NAAC?
NAAC counts books and chapters in edited volumes published per teacher, and institutions record the ISBN as evidence. Keep the copyright page and ISBN details for your file.
What is the cheapest way to publish a book with ISBN?
JW Book’s Basic plan starts at ₹2,500 + 18% GST, with a free ISBN and 100% royalty. Add a Crossref DOI for ₹500, or choose Affordable, which includes it.
How long does publication take?
Typically 7–25 working days, depending on the plan, the manuscript length and how quickly revisions are returned.
Who owns the copyright?
You do. You keep 100% copyright and 100% royalty on every copy sold.
