How to Check Your Paper, Thesis, Book or Assignment

The check is the same; what you look for, and the limit you must meet, depend on the document.

Research paper

How to check
Check the full manuscript before submission, references included; the report lets you exclude them. Fix matches in the introduction and literature review first.
Typical limit
Journals commonly ask for under 15–20%; JMVRA looks for under 15%.
100 pages · ₹960

Thesis or dissertation

How to check
Check each chapter as you finish it, then the complete thesis before submission to the university.
Typical limit
UGC Level 0 is up to 10% similarity, excluding permitted material.
300 pages · ₹2,400

Book manuscript

How to check
Check the whole book, including quoted passages, before it goes to layout. Contributed chapters in an edited book should each be checked.
Typical limit
Publishers set their own limit; a clean report before production avoids rework.
1,000 pages · ₹5,600

Assignment or project

How to check
Check the final draft, quote and cite every source, and keep the report if your institution asks for proof.
Typical limit
Set by your college or course; ask before you submit.
Up to 25 pages · from ₹500

Check Plagiarism with iThenticate in Six Steps

No account and no subscription — you pay for the one report you need, at jwbook.org/similarity-check (opens in a new tab).

  1. Prepare the file. Word (.docx) or a text-based PDF. A scanned page has no text to compare. Keep references in; exclude them in the report.
  2. Choose the page band. Bands are counted at about 250 words a page, so formatting changes do not move a document between bands.
  3. Submit the request. Open jwbook.org/similarity-check, attach the file and choose the band. You receive an acknowledgement with a reference number.
  4. iThenticate runs the check. The document is compared with web pages, published journal content and submitted work; AI-writing detection runs too if you asked for it.
  5. Read the source breakdown. Look at which passages match and where they come from — the breakdown matters more than the single percentage.
  6. Revise and recheck. Rewrite in your own words and cite properly, then recheck before you submit to the journal, university or publisher.

Best Plagiarism Checker Tools, Compared

The tools researchers and institutions use most. For journals, theses and books, what matters is coverage of subscription journal content — free web checkers do not have it.

Cheap “Turnitin reports” sold through shared student accounts can store your document in the student repository, so the published version later matches itself. An iThenticate check does not.

India · UGC rules

UGC Plagiarism Levels for Theses and Dissertations

The UGC (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2018 grade similarity in four levels. Universities check theses with the software their institution provides, such as DrillBit under ShodhShuddhi.

Level 0Up to 10%Minor similarity — no penalty.
Level 110% to 40%Submit a revised script within the stipulated time (not more than six months).
Level 240% to 60%Debarred from submitting a revised script for one year.
Level 3Above 60%Registration for the programme cancelled.

Properly cited quotations, references, common knowledge and standard terms are not counted as plagiarism. Check your own university’s rules too.

Questions

Plagiarism Check FAQs

How can I check my research paper for plagiarism?
Request an iThenticate (by Turnitin) similarity report at jwbook.org/similarity-check: attach the paper, choose the page band and the report arrives by email, usually in 1–2 working days. A 100-page band, which covers most research papers, costs ₹960.
Is iThenticate the same as Turnitin?
Both are made by Turnitin. Turnitin is the student service universities use for coursework; iThenticate is the professional service for researchers, journals and publishers, and it powers Crossref Similarity Check.
Will checking my paper store it in a database?
No. An iThenticate check does not add your document to the student repository, so the paper will not later match against itself.
What similarity percentage is acceptable?
It depends on who is asking. Under UGC Regulations 2018, up to 10% is Level 0 for theses and dissertations. Journals commonly ask for under 15–20%; JMVRA looks for under 15%.
Does the report detect AI-written text?
Yes, on request — ask for AI-writing detection in your request. Treat it as an indicator to review, not a verdict.
Can I check a book or an assignment, not only a paper?
Yes. Any text document can be checked; choose the page band that fits — 25 pages for an assignment or short paper, 1,000 for most book manuscripts.
Are free plagiarism checkers enough?
For a quick look, perhaps. Most free tools search only the public web and miss subscription journal content, which is where academic matches are usually found.
How do I reduce similarity honestly?
Rewrite the matched passages in your own words, quote and cite anything you keep word for word, and cite your own earlier work. Avoid “plagiarism removal” services and AI paraphrasers; they create new problems.
