Want Scopus journals in Nigeria or a Web of Science journal list for Nigeria? Just a handful of Nigerian titles sit in either database. We name those that report coverage, show a quick ISSN check, and explain how scholars in Lagos, Ibadan, Zaria or Nsukka can find high-impact international journals for their discipline. Using the ISSN avoids confusion between journals with similar titles.
Scopus and Web of Science: The Essentials
Scopus, from Elsevier, curates its abstract and citation records selectively; it is where CiteScore comes from and the base for the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR). Web of Science is owned by Clarivate. Its Core Collection takes in SCIE (sciences), SSCI (social sciences), AHCI (arts and humanities) and ESCI (emerging sources), and the Journal Impact Factor is published in Journal Citation Reports. Both databases reassess titles and can remove them. To read more: Scopus explained and Web of Science explained.
| Term | What it is | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Scopus | Elsevier’s curated citation and abstract database | Scopus Sources |
| SCIE | Science Citation Index Expanded, covering science journals in Web of Science | Master Journal List |
| SSCI | Social Sciences Citation Index, covering social science journals in Web of Science | Master Journal List |
| AHCI | Arts & Humanities Citation Index, covering humanities journals in Web of Science | Master Journal List |
| ESCI | Emerging Sources Citation Index, a Web of Science collection of quality-checked journals | Master Journal List |
| Journal Impact Factor | A citation average over two years, supplied since the 2023 release for every journal in the Web of Science Core Collection | Journal Citation Reports |
| CiteScore | A four-year citation average covering Scopus journals | Scopus Sources |
| SJR | SCImago Journal Rank, a prestige-weighted measure calculated from Scopus data | SCImago |
| Quartile (Q1–Q4) | Where a journal stands within one subject category in a given year | JCR or SCImago |
Scopus and Web of Science do not index most Nigerian journals, which explains why so many Nigerian researchers publish abroad. The indexed Nigerian titles are typically medical journals published with an international partner plus a growing set of engineering and physical science journals admitted to Scopus since 2021. For the whole current picture, filter SCImago’s rankings to Nigeria, which lists journals published in Nigeria with Scopus data, quartiles and SJR.

International Publishing Options From Nigeria
Few journals published in Nigeria are in Scopus or Web of Science, so researchers who must publish in indexed outlets usually go abroad as well: African regional titles, society journals and the major international publishers. The 2025 Scopus-in-Africa study (Kanyika & Kim) speaks of a “continued struggle”, with African journals in Scopus rising in number but only slowly.
Check three things before choosing an international journal: the article processing charge (APC), and whether the publisher offers waivers or discounts to authors in lower- and middle-income countries; whether your institution or funder pays APCs; and whether your field has a diamond open access journal (free to read and to publish) — DOAJ can filter by “without fees”. Your university's research office can tell you whether TETFund or institutional grants may support publication costs, and preprint servers such as AfricArXiv let you share work early.
Quartiles, Impact Factor and Top-Tier Journals
Most discussion centres on three measures: the Journal Impact Factor (from Clarivate, over two years, covering only Web of Science journals), CiteScore (Scopus, over four years) and SJR (SCImago, built on Scopus data and weighted). Quartiles Q1–Q4 place a journal within a single subject category in a given year. No metric judges how good an individual article is.
Most researchers in Nigeria will find the highest-impact venues in their discipline among international journals rather than local ones. Search them by subject category in Journal Citation Reports, Scopus Sources or SCImago, then read recent articles to judge the match. Our guide to finding high impact factor journals walks through the method one step at a time.
Picking an Indexed Journal for Your Subject
| Field | Nigeria-published journals | Then search |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine & health | Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice; Nigerian Postgraduate Medical Journal; Annals of African Medicine | Medicine categories in JCR and Scopus |
| Engineering & technology | Nigerian Journal of Technology; Nigerian Journal of Technological Development | Scopus engineering categories; SCIE |
| Physical sciences & computing | Journal of the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences | Scopus physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science |
| Agriculture & environment | Journal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management (check indexing) | Scopus agricultural and environmental sciences |
| Social sciences & humanities | Few Nigerian titles are indexed; use international journals | SSCI, AHCI, ESCI and Scopus social sciences |
Getting Your Paper Ready for an Indexed Journal
Indexed journals are flooded with submissions and turn away a large proportion at the editor’s desk, typically because of poor fit or weak presentation instead of weak science. To improve your odds:
- Put your contribution first. Say in the abstract and the closing paragraph of the introduction what is novel and why it counts outside your own context.
- Join the journal’s discussion. Refer to recent studies, among them pieces from your target journal when they are relevant.
- Describe your methods completely. Apply the reporting guideline that suits your study design (for example CONSORT, PRISMA or STROBE), which lets reviewers assess rigour.
- Tailor your cover letter. Use a few lines to say why this journal’s readership will find the paper relevant.
Frequent Mistakes With Indexed Journals
- Relying on a logo shown on the journal’s front page instead of the database record.
- Not specifying the index — “Web of Science” may denote SCIE, SSCI, AHCI or ESCI.
- Overlooking an ended listing — indexing from last year might no longer apply.
- Selecting purely by metric — a journal that does not cover your field will turn the paper down fast.
How JMVRA suits authors in Nigeria
Based in India, JMVRA (ISSN 2984-8911) is an international open access journal covering many disciplines. It is not a Nigerian journal, but it accepts papers from authors in Nigeria. JMVRA is not in Scopus or Web of Science; it serves authors who want an affordable, peer-reviewed open access journal rather than an indexed one.
- Fee: foreign authors are charged $41 USD, but only once the paper is accepted, and one payment serves a team of up to 5 authors.
- Review: experts in the subject carry out a transparent, double-blind peer review, and the similarity score must stay below 15%.
- Access: papers are open access (CC BY 4.0); ask if you want a Crossref DOI.
- Clear on indexing: our articles are in Google Scholar, but Scopus, Web of Science and DOAJ do not index them.

Practical Tips for Nigerian Academics Publishing in Indexed Journals
Nigerian academics face promotion pressure alongside crowded teaching loads and uneven resources. These tips help you protect your reputation while building a steady, defensible publication record.
- Avoid pressure-driven shortcuts. Deadlines for promotion can tempt authors toward quick, weakly reviewed outlets. A paper in a doubtful journal can harm a record more than a slightly later publication in a sound one.
- Read the author guidelines in full. Journals reject many submissions for ignoring simple instructions on word limits, figures or declarations. A careful hour with the guidelines saves weeks of resubmission.
- Share credit fairly with students. If postgraduate students did substantial work, discuss authorship openly and acknowledge technical help appropriately. Fair credit follows widely accepted authorship criteria and prevents later disputes.
- Use institutional repositories. After checking the journal's policy on versions, deposit an allowed copy of your work in your university repository. This improves access for readers who cannot afford subscriptions.
- Respond to reviewers with a table. Answer each comment separately, quote the change you made and explain politely when you disagree. Organised replies make an editor's decision easier and reflect professional habits.
Resist rushed shortcuts, follow guidelines exactly, and treat co-authors and reviewers with the same care you give your data.
Questions Researchers Often Ask
Summary and What to Do Next
Nigeria has few indexed journals, though the number is rising, led by medicine, engineering and the physical sciences. Use them when they suit your work, turn to international journals when they do not, and always verify indexing in the database itself.
- Read the requirement you must satisfy and see whether Scopus, Web of Science, a quartile or an index is named.
- Choose candidate journals for your field using the tables above and international databases too.
- Check each title by its ISSN and keep a record of what you find.
- Non-indexed options appear in the list of research journals in Nigeria.
