The UGC CARE has been set up to identify, continuously monitor, report and maintain “UGC-CARE Reference List of Quality Journals”. It’s a standard quality that every journal must follow.
Please note: UGC discontinued the UGC CARE List by Public Notice dated 3 October 2024 (584th UGC Meeting) and replaced it with suggestive parameters for selecting credible peer-reviewed journals. The list and notices below are kept for reference because most Indian universities still ask scholars about UGC CARE — see the UGC 2026 peer-reviewed journal policy for what applies now.

Where the list below sits in the sequence: it belongs to the CARE years, between the numbered approved list and the parameters that apply now.
- UGC-Approved List of JournalsUGC publishes a numbered list; each journal on it carries a UGC journal number.
- Re-evaluation of the listUGC reviews the list and removes titles that scored low. Numbers from that list belong only to those journals.
- UGC-CARE List replaces itThe CARE reference list supersedes the earlier approved list; no new UGC journal numbers are issued.
- JMVRA is foundedEstablished after the numbered list had closed, so the journal has no UGC journal number to quote.
- CARE List discontinuedUGC's 584th meeting withdraws the CARE list. No replacement list is created.
- Suggested Parameters approvedEight categories of suggestive parameters (public notice 16 July 2025). JMVRA is aligned with UGC's Suggested Parameters for Choosing Peer-Reviewed Journals.

The UGC Approved List of Journals was replaced by the UGC-CARE list with effect from 14.06.2019.
What is the purpose of UGC CARE?
The UGC CARE has been set up to identify, continuously monitor, report and maintain the "UGC-CARE Reference List of Quality Journals". It is a standard quality that every journal must follow.
What details does this UGC CARE list of journals show?
For each entry the table on this page gives the serial number, the journal title, the publisher and the ISSN. Where a journal has no ISSN recorded against it, the ISSN column reads NA.
Can I download the official UGC CARE notices and lists?
Yes. Every UGC CARE and UGC notice PDF held on this site is listed further down this page with its file size, is embedded so it opens without a click, and can be opened in a new tab or downloaded.
Is the UGC CARE List still in force?
UGC discontinued the UGC CARE List by Public Notice dated 3 October 2024 (584th UGC Meeting) and replaced it with suggestive parameters for selecting credible peer-reviewed journals. The earlier lists and notices are kept here for reference because most Indian universities still ask scholars about UGC CARE.
