What Reviewers Look For, Field by Field
Each discipline has its own markers of a sound paper. Check yours against this list, then the author guidelines.
| Field family | Typical papers | Reviewers check |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering & Physical Sciences | Experimental studies, design and simulation papers, case studies | Reproducible method, test set-up and parameters, validated results, comparison with existing work |
| Computing & Emerging Technology | Algorithms, systems, models and applied studies | Datasets and code described, baselines compared, evaluation metrics justified, limitations stated |
| Life & Agricultural Sciences | Field and laboratory studies, surveys of species or crops | Sampling design, replication, statistical analysis, correct taxonomy and units |
| Health & Sports Sciences | Clinical, survey, case and pharmacological studies | Ethics approval and consent where people are involved, sample size, clear outcome measures |
| Mathematics & Statistics | Theorems and proofs, models, statistical applications | Rigorous proofs, stated assumptions, worked examples or numerical verification |
| Humanities, Social Sciences, Law & Education | Surveys, qualitative and doctrinal studies, critical and archival work | Clear research question, sources and citations, valid instruments, balanced argument |
| Commerce, Management & Tourism | Empirical studies, case studies, policy analyses | Data source and period, suitable statistical tests, practical implications |
| Environment & Sustainability | Assessments, monitoring studies, policy and technology reviews | Measurement methods, data period and location, link between findings and policy |
Before you choose a field, check the paper itself
These six apply in every family above; the table shows what is added per field.
- The title names the finding, not just the topic, and the abstract states the result plainly.
- The method is complete enough to repeat and short enough to follow.
- Every table and figure is numbered, captioned and referred to in the text.
- References are complete, consistent and each DOI resolves.
- Similarity is within the journal’s threshold and your own thesis is cited where reused.
- Ethics approval, consent and conflicts are declared where people or animals are involved.
Interdisciplinary Papers Are Welcome
Many of the strongest papers sit between two fields. Choose the field of your main research question, name the other in your keywords, and the editor assigns reviewers who cover both.
Books, Theses & Dissertations in Every Subject
PhD theses, research books, edited volumes and book chapters are published with an ISBN through the group’s book service, JWBook.org — for every discipline on this map.
